In the first century the Roman geographer Pliny the Elder wrote in his Natural History that of all metals the longest vein is iron. In the part of Cantabria that bathes the sea, there’s a very high mountain, all of this stuff, which is incredible. The most plausible interpretation of this text is that the Romans were perfectly aware of the existence of the enormous iron ore vein of Mount Triano that extended through the now called Mining Zone of Biscay, between Baracaldo and Somorrostro. Despite this bibliographic reference and the fact that there is certainty that the Romans already exploited the iron mines of the area and the presence in the vicinity of a Roman colony, that of Flavibriga (Castro-Urdiales), there is little evidence of Roman presence in the estuary of Barbadún and in the territory of Somorrostro.
