Aýna Spain

Aýna is a small village and municipality in the southern part of the province of Albacete, in the Spanish autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It is a popular summer holiday destination thanks to its pleasant scenery and climate. The village has just over 900 inhabitants, a number that declined between 1950 and 2000. Aýna is often called the “Manchegan Switzerland” because of its setting between two mountain ranges. The name Aýna comes from the Arabic ‏عَيْن‎ (ʕayn), meaning “spring” or “source”. The spelling of the town’s name preserves an archaic use of the letter ⟨y⟩, which was common in Old Castilian. Although the historical form used only the letter ⟨y⟩, the modern spelling includes an accent to show that the ⟨a⟩ and ⟨ý⟩ belong to different syllables rather than forming a diphthong. The spelling is noteworthy because it is one of the very few instances in Spanish where the character ⟨ý⟩ is used.
