Ayerbe Spain

Ayerbe lies 28 km from Huesca on the A-132 road towards Pamplona, on the River Gállego. It is bordered to the north by the Riglos crags and the Santo Domingo range of hills; to the east by the villages of Loarre and Loscorrales; to the south by Lupiñén-Ortilla; and to the west by Biscarrués and Murillo de Gállego. It is situated at 42°16′36″N 00°41′21″W, at 582 m above sea level (Alicante datum), and covers an area of 63.29 square kilometres. The town stands in an eroded depression carved into a Tertiary-age surface. The soil is dry, loose and stony, generally flat with a scattering of small isolated hills. Much of the land is covered with pine, olive and almond trees, and vineyards are reappearing. There are also cereal fields to the east and south. Evergreen oaks, rosemary, gorse and other shrubs, along with grassland, are common. Rabbits, hares and partridges are found from time to time. The area is particularly attractive for birdwatchers, who come to see lammergeiers, griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures, as well as a wide range of other birds of prey. Hunters have good opportunities to find wild boar and deer, along with partridge and quail. The range of hills behind Ayerbe forms part of the Pre-Pyrenees and rises to over 1,600 m, although the town itself lies on the plain at the foot of the range, which eventually slopes down to the River Ebro, about 100 km away.
