Holbox Island, Mexico

Holbox Island Mexico

Holbox Island is off the north coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. The island’s name comes from Yucatec Maya and means “black hole”. It is about 42 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, separated from the mainland by a 10‑kilometre‑long shallow lagoon that shelters flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. Holbox belongs to the Municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas and forms part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve. Still relatively undeveloped for mass tourism, Holbox’s main industry is fishing, especially lobster. Tourism is growing steadily, with the island becoming known for whale shark viewing, and many local dishes feature lobster and other fresh seafood.
