Licata, Sicily, Italy

Licata, Sicily Italy

Licata (Greek: Φιντίας; Latin: Phintias or Plintis; formerly also Alicata) is a city and comune on the south coast of Sicily, at the mouth of the Salso River (the ancient Himera), roughly halfway between Agrigento and Gela. It’s a major seaport that grew at the turn of the twentieth century, exporting sulphur – whose refining made Licata the largest sulphur-exporting centre in Europe – as well as asphalt, and at times cheese. To the west of the port city there’s a series of small pocket beaches separated by wave‑cut headlands up to 40 metres (130 ft) high (Amore 2002).
