Fügen Austria

Parts of the municipal area of Fügen also include Gagering, Kleinboden, Kapfing, Haidach and parts of Finsing. The area was already settled in the Bronze Age, as shown by urn graves that were found here. First mentioned in the 12th century, Fügen became an important industrial centre of the Zillertal valley in the 15th century, producing cannonballs and armour plate. Today, the municipal area of Fügen is home to one of Europe’s largest sawmills, Binder Holz, with its “FeuerWerk – WoodAdventureWorld Fügen”. In summer, the Zillertal valley offers an extensive network of hiking trails of around 1,000 km, as well as some 850 km of mountain bike routes. After an active day outdoors, you can relax in Fügen’s thermal spa, the “Erlebnistherme Zillertal”, which features not only the longest and most spectacular adventure slide in western Austria at 133 m, but also bubbling grottos and much more. If you prefer to experience the valley in comfort, you can take a trip on the Zillertal Railway running between Jenbach and Mayrhofen. There are three stops within the municipality of Fügen: Gagering, Fügen-Hart and Kapfing. In winter, there are two ski areas to choose from. The Hochzillertal ski area, which links the Hochfügen and Ski-Optimal Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach ski regions, offers 88 km of slopes and 39 lifts. The Fügen-Spieljoch ski area, on the other hand, offers 17 km of well-groomed pistes and 8 lifts and is particularly popular with families, as it is relatively small but has a lot to offer. And a little curiosity: Fügen is one of the places from which the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” began its journey around the world. The organ builder Karl Mauracher brought the song from Oberndorf near Salzburg to Fügen, and from this village it started to spread from 1832 onwards thanks to the “Zillertaler Nationalsänger” choir. Our recommendation: the local history museum in Fügen presents exhibits on the village’s long history. You can also find out about local clubs, traditions and handicrafts.
