Mayrhofen Austria

Mayrhofen is a town in the Zillertal (Ziller river valley) in the Austrian state of Tyrol, about an hour from the Tyrolean capital, Innsbruck. The town offers a wide range of summer and winter activities, including skiing, hiking, mountain biking and paragliding. Mayrhofen lies close to the Hintertux glacier which, at 3,250 metres (10,660 feet) above sea level, sits above the snowline and offers skiing all year round. The town is located between the Penken and Ahorn mountains, which provide ski runs in winter and mountain biking, hiking and paragliding in summer. Ahorn mainly offers easy and intermediate pistes, but it also has a long, steep black run (formerly graded red) that used to be part of the World Cup downhill circuit before it was removed for safety reasons. Penken is home to Austria’s steepest piste, Harakiri, as well as a wide variety of runs of different difficulty levels. It is linked by lifts to the villages of Finkenberg, Lanersbach and Schwendau. Penken is accessed by a gondola on the main street beside the Sport Hotel Strass in the centre of the village, while the Ahorn cable car – which, since 2008, has been Austria’s largest cable car with a capacity of 160 passengers – is located at the southern end of town. Mayrhofen has a strong snowboarding scene, with a Vans-sponsored funpark and the snowboard-focused Gasthof Zillertal hotel, run by the Dutch organisation SAIKO Expeditions. The mountaineer Peter Habeler and downhill skier Uli Spiess are both from Mayrhofen.
