Sölden, AT Austria

Covering around 467 km² (180 sq mi), Sölden is the largest municipality in Austria. Its 2003 population of 3,449 is far outnumbered by visitors, with capacity for about 15,000 guests. With over two million overnight stays per year, it ranks behind only Vienna and Salzburg as an Austrian tourist destination. While Sölden has lost some of its former small-village character, many other attractions have been significantly developed in recent years. The main village lies at 1,368 metres (4,488 ft) above sea level, while the upper village of Hochsölden at 2,090 m (6,857 ft) has five four-star hotels. The highest peak in the area is the Wildspitze at 3,768 m (12,362 ft), Austria’s second-highest mountain after the Großglockner. The Ötztal Glacier Road is the second-highest paved road in Europe, linking Sölden to the Rettenbach and Tiefenbachferner glaciers in the Ötztal Alps. In English the town’s name is sometimes written as “Soelden”, and you may see this spelling used on websites and in directions.
