Agia Galini, Crete Greece

Agia Galini is a village 15 kilometres east of Ierapetra. It is part of the municipality of Makrys Gialos on the island of Crete in Greece, and has developed into a tourist centre. Thanks to its idyllic location, Agia Galini was transformed in the 1970s and 1980s from a small fishing village into a hub for mass tourism. It offers numerous hotels, guesthouses, tavernas, bars and clubs, as well as a holiday camp. Besides tourism, agriculture – including greenhouse cultivation – is an important source of income for the wider area around Agia Galini. Off the coast lie the Paximadia islets, and there is also a nearby military zone with restricted access.
