Bastia, Corsica France

Bastia is a lively, cultural city in Corsica and the island’s main business and financial centre. It was the capital of Genoese administration in Corsica until the mid-18th century, and it has kept much of the architecture and atmosphere of that period, giving it a rugged, unpolished charm. At the same time, Bastia is unmistakably Mediterranean. The old quarter, known as the Terra Vecchia, is full of atmospheric streets, charming little shops and flamboyant Baroque churches. Highlights include the 15th‑century Oratoire St Roch, with its richly decorated Baroque interior and impressive organ, and Corsica’s largest church, the 17th‑century Saint‑Jean Baptiste Cathedral. In nearby Place du Marché, a flea market takes place every weekend. Around the Citadelle, the Terra Nova neighbourhood is one of the most colourful parts of town. Take time to wander among its restored houses and mansions. Stroll through the former grand gardens of the Palace of the Governors, Jardin Romieu, where you’ll have lovely views over the Vieux Port, the Old Port. The Vieux Port is one of the city’s most attractive areas, with tall, timeworn buildings surrounding a marina filled with sleek yachts. Corsica’s most successful commercial town is a lively and charming place with a fine port, distinctive architecture, good restaurants and a packed calendar of cultural events. Bastia offers far more than just sun and sea.
