Akrotiri, Santorini Greece

Akrotiri is a town on the island of Santorini. Located 15 km south of Fira, the island’s capital, it is a settlement with over 3,600 years of history. Akrotiri is also known for its archaeological site, one of the best-preserved from the Minoan civilisation. Ancient Akrotiri was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Thera/Santorini, which devastated the island (and gave it its present shape) and marked the decline of Minoan civilisation. Modern Akrotiri has grown up around the ruins of the 13th‑century Akrotiri Castle.
