Albenga Italy

Albenga is a town close to the Ligurian coast in north‑west Italy. Highlights for visitors include the fascinating medieval centre with its baptistry and cathedral, and a museum that houses the remains of a 1st‑century ship. In Roman times Albenga was a busy port town known as Albium Ingaunum. Over the centuries the coastline receded and the modern town now lies inland rather than directly on the sea. Albenga is unique in Liguria because it has preserved its ancient Roman street plan, with two main streets, the “cardo” and “decumanus”, crossing at the centre, and a series of medieval towers perfectly integrated into the townscape – earning it the nickname “the city of a hundred towers”.
