Almaty Kazakhstan

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan and serves as the country’s main commercial and cultural centre. It lies in the mountainous region of southern Kazakhstan. An aerial tramway links central Almaty with a popular leisure area on the summit of Kök Töbe, a mountain located just to the southeast of the city. According to the city’s Department of Natural Resources and Resource Use Management, as of 2007 Almaty had 125 fountains. Among these is the “Oriental Calendar” Fountain, whose 12 sculpted figures represent the 12 animals of the traditional Kazakh 12‑year animal cycle.
