The Alpujarra Spain

The Alpujarra is a natural and historical region in Andalusia, Spain, on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada and in the neighbouring valley. The average elevation is about 1,200 metres above sea level. It stretches across two provinces, Granada and Almería, and is sometimes referred to in the plural as “Las Alpujarras”. There are several explanations for this Arabic-origin name; the most convincing is that it comes from al-basharāt (البَشَرَات), meaning something like “mountain range of pastures”. The administrative centre of the Granada side is Órgiva, while the centre for the Almería side is Alhama de Almería.
