Areatza Spain

The municipality of Areatza lies within the historic territory of Bizkaia, in the Arratia–Nervión valley, and is framed by Mount Gorbeia (1,481 m), the highest mountain in Bizkaia. The character of its old town invites you to wander its narrow, cobbled streets and admire the distinctive houses that still preserve all the traditional Basque charm. This Biscayan town also boasts an architectural heritage of great interest, declared a “monumental complex” by the Basque Government. On the right bank of the Arratia river, opposite the Zubizarra bridge, stands the Santa Isabel convent. You can also visit the church of San Bartolomé, a modest building completed in the 19th century. From there, you soon reach the most notable buildings, clustered around the town hall square: the Gortazar Palace, the Riscal Palace and the neoclassical town hall itself. Areatza, set in a spectacular location at the foot of Gorbeia, is the starting point for many mountain walks. The Gorbeia Nature Park is considered one of the most beautiful areas in the Basque Autonomous Community, thanks to its outstanding scenic, cultural and natural value.
