Bellmunt del Priorat Spain

Bellmunt del Priorat is a small municipality in the Priorat region, located a few kilometres from the regional capital, Falset. Priorat lies in the south of Catalonia, has medieval origins, and part of the municipal area once formed part of the old priory of the Escaladei Charterhouse. The municipality preserves traces of past eras that transport visitors back in time; one of the most notable is the Saracen fortress of Siurana, where remains of one of the oldest mosques in Catalonia may have been found. It is also one of the most important mining centres in Catalonia, and was a pioneer in the lead industry. With almost twenty mines, Bellmunt was the main mining centre of the wider mining basin that stretches across Catalonia among the municipalities of Falset, Bellmunt del Priorat and El Molar. Visitors can enjoy the village by visiting the parish church of Saint Lucy, one of its most significant buildings, constructed between the late 17th century and the early 20th century, and by visiting the old miners’ estate, where the miners and their families lived and where some of the services of the mining company, such as security, were also based.
