Bucaramanga, Colombia

Bucaramanga Colombia

Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander, is one of the largest cities in Colombia. Set in the Eastern Colombian Andes, it’s surrounded by stunning scenery, beautiful mountains and historic towns and suburbs, such as the nearby colonial suburb of Girón. The main attraction is the whitewashed historic centre of Girón; its colonial buildings and cobbled streets have earned it National Monument status. The colonial centre of barrio Girón is beautiful and well preserved, with whitewashed houses set against a backdrop of mountains. Back in the city centre, the Museo Casa de Bolívar is located in a handsome colonial mansion with lovely courtyards. The politician Simón Bolívar stayed here for two months in 1828. Exhibitions include some of Bolívar’s personal belongings along with furniture, documents and other items from both the colonial and independence periods. Just across the road from the Museo Casa de Bolívar is the Casa de la Cultura, a beautiful colonial building that hosts interesting art exhibitions by local and international artists. The Catedral de la Sagrada Familia is also well worth a visit. Known as “The Beautiful City” and “The City of Parks”, Bucaramanga is full of attractive green spaces, making it a very pleasant place to visit.
