Port Blair India

Port Blair is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India in the Bay of Bengal. It’s also the local administrative sub-division (tehsil) of the islands, the headquarters of South Andaman district, and the territory’s only officially designated town. It’s home to the headquarters of the Andaman and Nicobar Police and the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the first integrated tri-service command of India’s armed forces. Port Blair is the main gateway for visitors to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It’s linked to mainland India by both air and sea. The flight from the mainland to Port Blair takes about two hours, while sea journeys to Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam take around 3–4 days. Flights to Port Blair operate from Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam, all arriving at Veer Savarkar International Airport. Sea connections from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam arrive at Haddo Wharf. The city hosts several museums and a major naval base, INS Jarawa of the Indian Navy, along with sea and air bases of the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Air Force. Port Blair is also well known for the historic Cellular Jail and nearby small islands such as Corbyn’s Cove, Wandoor, Ross Island and Viper Island, many of which were once occupied by British colonists.
