Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States, about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The population at the 2010 census was 103,340. Known as the “Media Capital of the World” and located only a few miles northeast of Hollywood, it is home to, or hosts major production facilities for, many media and entertainment companies, including The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, The Burbank Studios, Cartoon Network Studios with the West Coast branch of Cartoon Network, and Insomniac Games. Hollywood Burbank Airport was once the site of Lockheed’s Skunk Works, where some of the most secret and technologically advanced aircraft were developed, including the U-2 spy planes that revealed Soviet missile installations in Cuba in October 1962. Burbank is made up of two distinct areas: a downtown/foothill district in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, and a flatland district. The city was famously referred to as “Beautiful Downtown Burbank” on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. It was named after David Burbank, a New Hampshire–born dentist and entrepreneur who established a sheep ranch there in 1867.
