Cagnes-sur-Mer France

Cagnes-sur-Mer is a laid-back seaside town on the French Riviera, roughly halfway between Nice and Antibes. Much quieter than its glitzy neighbours, it combines a wide shingle beach and a long seafront promenade with a medieval hilltop village and a strong artistic heritage. It’s an easy base if you’re flying into Nice Airport, with regular buses and trains linking you to the rest of the Côte d’Azur. Down by the sea, the pace of life is unhurried. The three‑kilometre promenade is ideal for a stroll or a cycle, or for stopping off at one of the many cafés and beach restaurants that open directly onto the shore. The beaches are mostly pebbly but well looked after, with both public sections and paid private areas offering sun loungers, parasols and showers. In summer, the town puts on open‑air concerts and family‑friendly events along the seafront. Up above the coast, the old village of Haut‑de‑Cagnes is a maze of steep lanes, stone houses and leafy little squares with sweeping views over the Mediterranean. At its centre stands the Château Grimaldi, now a museum dedicated to local history and modern art, including works inspired by the town’s most famous resident, the painter Pierre‑Auguste Renoir. Just below, the Renoir Museum preserves the artist’s former home among centuries‑old olive trees, with his studio, furniture and several original works on show. Cagnes-sur-Mer also suits travellers who like to mix culture with the outdoors. The nearby racecourse hosts horse racing and events throughout the year, and the surrounding hills offer walking trails and cycling routes. With its mix of Riviera sunshine, authentic village character and strong artistic identity, Cagnes-sur-Mer works just as well as a quiet holiday spot as it does a handy base for exploring the French Riviera.
