Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres Mexico

Isla Mujeres lies in the Caribbean Sea, just off the Yucatán Peninsula in the south‑east of Mexico. The island belongs to one of the ten municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo and is about thirteen kilometres from the city of Cancún, the main tourist hub of the region. Isla Mujeres is a quaint, charming island set just across the bay from Cancún. Its warm, clear waters are an ideal habitat for dolphins and turtles, and swimming with them is one of the area’s most appealing activities. This is a place rich in history, with spectacular beaches. At the southern tip of the island you’ll find the remains of a Mayan temple. The island became world‑famous in the 1970s, when the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks was introduced to the world by the renowned Mexican oceanographer Ramón Bravo. Isla Mujeres is also known for its beautiful underwater scenery, excellent snorkelling and diving spots, and remarkable biodiversity. Another highlight is the “El Garrafón” park and beach club, where you can enjoy activities such as snorkelling, snuba, Sea Trek and kayaking. Within the park there is also a small archaeological area dedicated to Ixchel.
