Cavallino-Treporti, Venice Italy

A natural environment of undeniable beauty, a protected area where the fauna and flora of different habitats – lagoon and sea – live side by side, and where a variety of landscapes follow one after another: stretches of tidal flats and salt marshes, fishing valleys and vegetable gardens, historic villages, military architecture, lighthouses and small harbours, the sandy beach, the extensive pinewood and the mouth of the River Sile. Cavallino-Treporti is a natural park suspended between the sea and the lagoon, located near Venice. It’s a unique environment within its 15 km of territory. The municipality lies on a peninsula that separates the northern part of the Venetian lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. The River Sile (which flows into the old riverbed of the River Piave) separates it from the municipal area of Jesolo to the north-east. The peninsula is crossed along its entire length by the Pordelio Canal which, to the west, branches into two further canals (Portosecco and Saccagnana); all three canals are navigable. To the east, the Pordelio Canal is connected to the River Sile by the Casson Canal; its confluence with the river is controlled by an artificial sluice gate.
