Gelsenkirchen Germany

Gelsenkirchen is in the heart of the Ruhr region in Germany. Located in the western part of the country, it lies close to major cities such as Düsseldorf and Cologne. Through coal mining, the Ruhr region became the former industrial capital of Germany and gave rise to densely populated cities. During the Second World War, the area was heavily bombed because of its high industrial value. After the war, coal mining was drastically reduced and the region was hit by high unemployment. Gelsenkirchen, like its neighbouring cities, is now reshaping its image by promoting its industrial heritage.
