Bad Homburg, Germany

Bad Homburg Germany

Bad Homburg, formally Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, is a city in the state of Hesse in west-central Germany. It sits at the foot of the wooded Taunus hills, just north of Frankfurt am Main. First recorded in the 12th century, it changed rulers many times, becoming part of Hesse in 1521 and later the independent city and landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg (1622–1866). The rediscovery of the Elisabeth mineral spring in 1834, along with other springs first known to the Romans, led to the opening of a casino in 1841 and the development of the new town. It grew into an internationally fashionable spa resort; in the 1890s, Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII of England), adopted the soft-felt Homburg hat from a local militiaman’s headgear and made it popular worldwide.
