Mantova Italy

Mantua, or Mantova in Italian, halfway between Milan and Venice, in the Lombardy region, is situated on the banks of the Mincio, Po and Oglio rivers. It's one of those cities that remains somewhat overshadowed by the more popular tourist destinations in Italy. Alongside Verona, Cremona, Modena or Parma, there's a circular route that you can explore if you're already familiar with Milan, Rome or Venice. In Mantua, the plot of the opera Rigoletto unfolds, and it's also the birthplace of the poet Virgil. Its Renaissance urban landscape, fostered by the medieval Gonzaga family, serves as a primary reason to consider during our journey through Lombardy. In 2008, Unesco honoured it with the award that recognises World Heritage Sites (on par with Sabbionetta) and in 2016 it was named the cultural capital of Italy, attracting investments to restore its artistic heritage and promoting the image of a thriving city. The Festivaletteratura is a literary event that takes place annually in the city, serving as a national benchmark in the literary and cultural scene.
