Torre del Greco Italy

The city of Torre del Greco is in the southern Italian region of Campania, in the province of Naples. Torre del Greco sits at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, which in the past often caused the town to be destroyed. In 1631 and 1794, Torre del Greco was buried under a thick layer of lava. The town was probably founded as a wealthy suburb of Herculaneum. Up until the year 1000, the city was called Turris Octava. The current name comes from a grape variety that thrives here, the Greco. During the Middle Ages it was very prosperous thanks to rich fish catches and high yields from coral processing.
