Filandia Colombia

Filandia is a town and municipality in the northern part of the department of Quindío, Colombia. It’s located on the western side of the Cordillera Central section of the Andes mountain range that runs through central Colombia, 26 km north of the departmental capital, Armenia. It is the northernmost of the twelve municipalities that make up Quindío, the second smallest department in Colombia. Filandia is home to a small community whose economy is based on agriculture and tourism. Although coffee is the main agricultural product, the municipality’s varied ecosystem makes it ideal for growing a wide range of fruits and vegetables. The population is more or less evenly split between the town and the countryside, with nearly 7,000 people living in the town of Filandia itself and around 6,500 in the rest of the municipality. Most people are classified as mestizo (63.2%) and the most common religion is Roman Catholicism. The town’s traditional architecture, surrounding landscapes and the friendliness of the local people make Filandia one of the most beautiful and attractive towns in Quindío and in Colombia. Its best-known tourist attractions are the mirador (viewing tower), which offers sweeping views over the Cauca River valley to the west and the Los Nevados National Natural Park to the east (you can also see both Armenia and Pereira from the top of the tower), and the café on the main square where scenes from the popular Colombian telenovela “Café, con aroma de mujer” were filmed.
