Fiesole, Italy

Fiesole Italy

Its origins go back to the 7th century BC, when it became a thriving Etruscan city. One of its great cultural treasures is its archaeological heritage, with Etruscan temples and remains from the Roman period, particularly visible in the ancient baths and in the ruins of a 1st‑century BC amphitheatre. If you visit Fiesole during the summer months, you’ll see this amphitheatre regain its former splendour, as it hosts a jazz festival and theatrical performances as part of the Fiesolana Estate, the oldest open‑air festival in all of Italy. A visit to this archaeological complex is complemented by entry to the Bandini Museum, which displays works of art from the dawn of the Renaissance. As a counterpoint, you can also visit the Primo Conti Museum, where the work of the avant‑garde artist of the same name is exhibited. Architecture and religious art lovers will find plenty to enjoy in the Cathedral of San Romolo and the Basilica of San Alessandro, a fifteenth‑century church in a location offering wide views over the surrounding area, dotted with cosy country villas. Older still, and higher up, is the Church of San Francesco, dating from the fourteenth century.
