Fort Augustus United Kingdom

Tucked away at the southern end of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, Fort Augustus is a small, characterful village where history meets sweeping Highland scenery. Once a key military stronghold, it’s now a calm, laid‑back base for exploring the Great Glen, surrounded by gentle hills, dark, brooding waters and wide, ever‑changing skies. The village itself is compact and easy to get around on foot, with stone cottages, snug pubs and independent shops creating a friendly, close‑knit atmosphere. The heart of the village is the Caledonian Canal, designed by the renowned engineer Thomas Telford. In Fort Augustus, an impressive ladder of canal locks drops down towards Loch Ness; in the summer months you can easily pass the time watching boats make their way through the lock system, accompanied by the clatter of gates and the steady thrum of engines. Paths along the canal and the loch offer gentle, scenic walks, giving a relaxed introduction to Highland landscapes without the need for serious hiking. Fort Augustus is also one of the most accessible spots for getting up close to Loch Ness. Regular boat trips head out onto the water, with commentary on the loch’s geology, history and, inevitably, the long‑lived tale of the Loch Ness Monster. On shore, small visitor centres and displays help bring the area’s past into focus—from traces of the 18th‑century fort to stories of monastic life in the former Benedictine abbey, parts of which have now been converted into holiday apartments. Despite its peaceful feel, the village works well as a base for exploring more of the Highlands. From here, day trips can take you along the Great Glen Way, to nearby Urquhart Castle, or further afield to Inverness, Fort William and the dramatic mountain landscapes of Glen Coe and Ben Nevis. After a day out, you can head back to Fort Augustus for a filling meal in a local inn, trying traditional Scottish fare and perhaps a dram of whisky, rounding off your day in one of Scotland’s most atmospheric corners.
