Forio, Ischia Island Italy

Forio is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in southern Italy, located on the island of Ischia. Its territory includes the town of Panza, the only frazione of both Forio and the island of Ischia. Panza has always been an independent village, dating back to the 16th century when the island’s first governmental structures were introduced. In 1975, the inhabitants of Panza attempted to become an independent comune, but the referendum, requested by the inhabitants of Forio, was rejected by the Campania Regional Government. Along the coast there are numerous watchtowers, built in the Middle Ages to defend against raids by Saracen and North African pirates.
