Gipuzkoa is a province of Spain and a historic territory within the autonomous community of the Basque Country. Its capital city is Donostia–San Sebastián. Gipuzkoa borders the French department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques to the northeast, the province and autonomous community of Navarre to the east, Biscay to the west, Álava to the southwest, and the Bay of Biscay to the north. It is situated at the easternmost end of the Cantabrian Sea, on the Bay of Biscay, with 66 kilometres (41 miles) of coastline. With a total area of 1,980 square kilometres (760 square miles), Gipuzkoa is Spain’s smallest province. It has 89 municipalities and a population of 720,592 (2018), with more than half living in the Donostia–San Sebastián metropolitan area. Besides the capital, other important towns and cities include Irun, Errenteria, Zarautz, Mondragón, Eibar, Hondarribia, Oñati, Tolosa, Beasain and Pasaia. Its oceanic climate gives the province an intense green landscape with little temperature variation. Gipuzkoa is the province in the Basque Country where the Basque language is most widely used: 49.1% of the population spoke Basque in 2006.
