Grenoble France

Grenoble is a city of about 158,000 inhabitants in south‑eastern France, in the Rhône-Alpes region that includes the French Alps. Winters are quite cold, with snow most years, while summers can be very hot, as the surrounding mountains block much of the wind. Two rivers run through the city, the Drac and the Isère, and it is ringed by three mountain ranges: the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne. The largest urban area in the French Alps, Grenoble combines a striking mountain setting with a long history as an outward‑looking, pioneering city. Its economy is built on close links between industry, universities and research. The city is well known for its university campus and for the many scientific research centres in the north‑east, making it France’s leading research hub outside the Paris region and home to a large community of international scientists and students. Compact and full of charm, Grenoble has the feel of a small, beautiful city, with something almost fairytale‑like about its situation, a calm ‘sleeping beauty’ nestled among snow‑capped peaks.
