Guarulhos, Brazil

Guarulhos Brazil

Guarulhos is the second most populous city in the state of São Paulo, with more than 1.4 million inhabitants, making it the most populous non-capital city in Brazil. It was founded in 1560 by Jesuits to protect the village of São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga (the present-day city of São Paulo) from attacks by the Tamoios people. Over the course of its history, Guarulhos has gone through major changes, evolving from a gold-extracting settlement to an industrial town, initially focused on brickmaking and now a diverse industrial city that is home to several major Brazilian and international companies. Its development has been helped by its strategic location, close to São Paulo and along the Rio–São Paulo corridor, which links Brazil’s two most important cities. Guarulhos is home to Brazil’s most important airport, São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, also known as Cumbica Airport, which is the second-busiest airport in Latin America.
