Celaya, Mexico

Celaya Mexico

Known for its exquisite handcrafted small boxes, Celaya is considered “the Golden Door of the Bajío” because of the commercial importance it has held since its foundation in 1570. Its name is of Basque origin and means “flat land”. Another of its geographical features is its favourable position on the Bajío plateau, with its lands watered from north to southwest by the Lerma River. During colonial times, the city was an important centre for growing and distributing products that were sent to the mines of Guanajuato and Zacatecas.
