Higüey Dominican Republic

Higüey is the capital city of La Altagracia Province in the east of the Dominican Republic, and the country’s eighth largest city. The Yuma River flows through its urban area. Higüey was also the name of a former indigenous chiefdom at the easternmost tip of Hispaniola when Christopher Columbus arrived. Today it is one of the country’s fastest-growing cities economically, sometimes called the Capital of Dominican Tourism or the Capital of Stockbreeding. As of 2006, over 150,000 people lived in Higüey. The city depends mainly on tourism, with many residents working in the hotel complexes of nearby Punta Cana or selling goods and services to visitors. The city’s most important landmarks are the Basilica of La Altagracia and the Church of San Dionisio (Saint Denis), which dates from the 16th century.
