Huesca (Province) Spain

Huesca is a province in northeastern Spain, in the north of Aragon. Its capital is the city of Huesca. Located just south of the central Pyrenees, Huesca shares an international border with France, specifically with the departments of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées. Within Spain, it borders the provinces of Navarre, Zaragoza and Lleida. The Romans colonised what is now the province of Huesca, which formed the northern part of Hispania Tarraconensis. They remained there well into the 5th century, until the arrival of the Visigoths. As a mountainous frontier region, it was difficult to control. The northern counties had at one time been part of the Kingdom of Navarre, but later broke away. They managed to hold back early Moorish invasions in the Middle Ages by forming alliances among themselves and with the Franks, becoming Frankish feudal marches. The drive for sovereignty and independence among these northern border counts gave rise to the Kingdom of Aragon. This kingdom would become the basis for the Crown of Aragon, and ultimately form part of what became the Kingdom of Spain.
