Kallikrateia Greece

Kallikrateia is a municipal unit in Chalkidiki, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it has been part of the municipality of Nea Propontida; before that it was an independent municipality with its seat in the town of Nea Kallikrateia. The municipal unit covers an area of 108.894 km². According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 11,571 people, while the town itself has 7,238 inhabitants, making it the third-largest in Chalkidiki. Nea Kallikrateia was founded after the refugee crisis in 1922, mainly by residents who came from Kallikrateia (today Mimarsinan) in Eastern Thrace and settled in the area where the metochi of the Xenofontos Monastery of Mount Athos stood, a place known as “Stomion”. Many accounts suggest that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, though this has not been definitively confirmed.
