The Province of Lecce is a county-level area in the Apulia region of Italy, with its capital in the city of Lecce. The province is often called the “Heel of Italy”. Situated on the Salento peninsula, it is the second most populous province in Apulia and the 21st most populous in Italy. The province covers an area of 2,799.07 square kilometres and has a total population of 802,807 (2016). There are 97 communes (Italian: comuni) in the province. It is bordered by the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi to the northwest, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. This setting has made it a popular tourist destination. Over the centuries it has been ruled by the Romans, Byzantine Greeks, Carolingians, Lombards, Arabs, and Normans. The main towns include Lecce, Gallipoli, Nardò, Maglie, and Otranto. Key agricultural products are wheat and maize.
