Leiden is a city and municipality in South Holland, in the Netherlands. In August 2017 the municipality of Leiden had a population of 123,856, but the city forms one densely built-up area with its suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten and Zoeterwoude, with 206,647 inhabitants in total. The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) also includes Katwijk in this agglomeration, bringing the total population of the Leiden urban area to 270,879. In the wider Leiden urban region, Teylingen, Noordwijk and Noordwijkerhout are also included, with a total of 348,868 inhabitants. Leiden lies on the Oude Rijn, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of The Hague and about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Amsterdam. The recreational area of the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) is just to the northeast of Leiden.
