Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Spain

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city that offers sun, sea and an exceptional historic legacy. Mild temperatures all year round make it a very pleasant seaside resort, popular with both Spanish and international visitors. This cosmopolitan city, the largest in the Canary Islands, is an eclectic mix of cultures: aboriginal Guanche roots, a colonial past and a mainland-Spain feel set against an African landscape give it a truly distinctive character. The city’s old quarter, La Vegueta, preserves colonial architecture from the 15th and 16th centuries in its elegant courtyards and balconies. This lively neighbourhood was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. It’s also a hotspot for some of the island’s best cafés, bars and restaurants. Be sure to visit Las Palmas’ many museums, including the excellent Museo Canario, with its fascinating mummies and trepanned skulls from the island’s aboriginal inhabitants. For more adventurous travellers, there’s a huge range of activities to choose from, including surfing, swimming and sailing, as well as scuba diving, snorkelling, abseiling, bungee jumping and paragliding. And of course, you’ll also find some of the best nightlife in the region here.
