Mazunte Mexico

Mazunte is a small beach town on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca, Mexico (15.66485°N 96.55388°W). It lies 22 km southwest of San Pedro Pochutla on coastal Highway 200, about 10 km west of Puerto Ángel and roughly 1 km from San Agustinillo, and 264 km south of the city of Oaxaca. There are two suggested origins for the name. Some sources say that “Mazunte” comes from a Nahuatl phrase, “maxotetia,” meaning “please deposit eggs here.” Older residents, however, say it comes from the word “mizontle,” used locally for a crab species that was once very abundant in the area.
