Miami International Airport, also known as MIA and historically as Wilcox Field, is the main airport serving the Miami area in Florida, United States. It operates over 1,000 daily flights to 167 domestic and international destinations and is one of three airports serving the region. The airport is located in an unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County, about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Downtown Miami, next to the cities of Miami and Miami Springs and the village of Virginia Gardens, with Hialeah, Doral, and the census-designated place of Fontainebleau nearby. It is South Florida’s principal airport for long‑haul international flights and a key hub for the southeastern United States, offering passenger and cargo services to cities throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa and Western Asia, as well as cargo flights to East Asia. It is the largest gateway between the United States and Latin America and one of the biggest airline hubs in the country, supported by its proximity to major tourist attractions, strong local economic growth, large Latin American and European communities, and its strategic position for connecting traffic between North America, Latin America and Europe.
