Gijón, Spain

Gijón Spain

Gijón is a coastal city in the province of Asturias in northwest Spain. It’s a dynamic, lively place, with plenty of parks, sports facilities, and carefully restored historic and artistic heritage. As one of the region’s main cities, Gijón hosts fairs, conferences, concerts, and major cultural and sporting events. The Old Town lies close to the City Hall Square and spreads across several areas. In Plaza del Marqués you’ll find the statue of King Pelayo and the elegant Revillagigedo Palace. It’s an ideal spot to sit down with a drink in one of the many bars and clubs. Cimavilla is the old fishermen’s quarter, full of small, brightly painted houses, traditional cider bars, and late‑night venues. Walking straight up from Cimavilla’s streets brings you to the top of the Santa Catalina headland, where you can enjoy sweeping views over the city and harbour. Here you’ll also find one of Gijón’s most important landmarks, Eduardo Chillida’s sculpture “Elogio del Horizonte” (Eulogy to the Horizon). Gijón preserves remains of Roman settlements, such as the Campo Valdés baths from the 1st century AD, the largest surviving Roman baths in Spain. A long‑standing favourite holiday resort among people in Spain, the city combines a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene with excellent beaches.
