Priorat, Spain

Priorat Spain

Priorat is a comarca in Catalonia, Spain. The central part of the comarca, known as “Priorat històric”, produces highly regarded wines certified under the DOQ Priorat designation. Wines from elsewhere in the comarca are certified as DO Montsant, a region that also includes a small part of the neighbouring comarca of Ribera d’Ebre. Until 1972, however, galena mining was the main economic activity, dating back to prehistoric times. Another major agricultural activity is the production of olives and olive oil, the latter certified under the DOP Siurana label. Historically, hazelnuts and almonds were produced in greater quantities, but these crops are now grown mainly for personal use.
