Saint-Raphaël is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in the south‑east of France. Immediately to the west of Saint-Raphaël is another, older town called Fréjus, and together they form an urban area known as Fréjus Saint-Raphaël. Var is in the region called Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, often shortened to PACA. In the second half of the nineteenth century the town came under the influence of mayor Félix Martin and the writer Alphonse Karr, and thanks to their efforts and its mild climate, the commune developed into a seaside resort popular with artists, sportspeople and politicians. It is the administrative centre of the Fréjus Saint-Raphaël canton, which is the economic and cultural hub of eastern Var and is in the Draguignan arrondissement. Its inhabitants are known as Raphaëlois in French, or Rafelencs in Provençal Occitan.
