Tabanan Indonesia

Tabanan is the main town and administrative centre of the regency of the same name in Bali. Parts of the regency fall into what’s generally seen as Central Bali, while others are more often thought of as West Bali. For this guide, Tabanan is treated as part of Central Bali, as that’s where most of the main sights for visitors are found. The southern coastal areas were once little visited due to limited infrastructure, but they’ve seen some light development in recent years and now offer a number of higher–end places to stay. Tabanan is still best known, though, for its lush green scenery, gentle hills and, above all, the dramatic presence of Mount Batukaru, Bali’s second–highest peak at 2,276 metres. The nearby town of Mengwi has a long and significant royal history, reflected today in the impressive temple complex at Taman Ayun, one of the area’s standout cultural sights.
