tegernsee Germany

The Tegernsee valley has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Records from the Benedictine monastery date from 746, when it was one of the most important cultural centres in the region during the Middle Ages. At its height, the monastery housed around 200 monks and over a thousand residents working in various trades. Under Abbot Bernhard Wenzl (1673–1700), the monastery was remodelled in the baroque style of the time, and only the abbey church has been preserved in its original form. In 1815, the monastery and castle buildings were converted into the summer residence of King Wittelsbach. This attracted many other nobles and artists to the area and marked the beginnings of Tegernsee’s tourism industry. In 1820, the landscape architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell designed the gardens around the castle, which are largely still preserved today. From the former monastery, the Herzoglich Bayerische Brauhaus Tegernsee brewery was founded. The monastery church now serves as the parish church.
