Tennoji Japan

Tennoji, in the south of Osaka, mixes the charm of old Japan with the buzz of a modern city. Once mainly known for its huge train station, it has grown into a lively area full of shopping centres, green parks, and cultural sights. It’s also one of the best places to experience Osaka’s down‑to‑earth side, especially when you leave the main roads and wander into the smaller, local neighbourhoods. Start your visit at Abeno Harukas, Japan’s tallest skyscraper. From the Harukas 300 observation deck, you get sweeping views over Osaka, particularly lovely at sunset when the city lights come on. At its base you’ll find the Kintetsu Department Store, Abeno Q’s Mall, and loads of cafés and restaurants, making Tennoji a handy spot for both shopping and eating out. For a quieter feel, head to Shitennoji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist temples. Its five‑storey pagoda, inner garden, and stone paths encourage you to slow down and take your time. Close by, Tennoji Park and Osaka Tennoji Zoo offer a relaxing escape from the city noise, with open lawns, seasonal flowers, and family‑friendly attractions. In the evening, make your way to the Shinsekai area, just a short stroll from Tennoji Station. With neon signs, retro shopfronts, and the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower, this district feels like stepping back into Showa‑era Osaka. Try kushikatsu (deep‑fried skewers), a local favourite, in one of the easy‑going places along the streets, and soak up the nostalgic, slightly rough‑around‑the‑edges charm that makes Tennoji stand out.
