Entebbe Uganda

The city is home to Uganda’s international airport, with the drive to or from Kampala taking about an hour. The United Nations uses Entebbe as a depot and staging area for vehicles and heavy equipment involved in peacekeeping and other missions across central Africa. Entebbe offers a relaxed stopover alternative to Kampala when flying into or out of the country: the air is clean, the streets are safe to walk, and the old colonial gardens and parks along the lakeshore create a calm, scenic atmosphere. Entebbe is perhaps best known for the Israeli commando raid of 4 July 1976, when over one hundred mainly Jewish hostages from a hijacked Air France flight were rescued. The operation was complicated by the support the then Ugandan president, Idi Amin, gave to the hijackers. More than forty Ugandan soldiers were killed by the Israelis during the rescue. State House, the official residence of the President of Uganda, stands on a hill overlooking the centre of Entebbe.
