Vulcano Island, Italy

Vulcano Island Italy

Vulcano is a small volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 25 km (16 miles) north of Sicily, at the southernmost end of the seven Aeolian Islands. The island covers 21 km² (8 sq mi), rises to 501 metres (1,644 feet) above sea level, and contains several volcanic calderas, including one of the four active volcanoes in Italy that are not underwater. The word “volcano”, and its equivalent in several European languages, comes from the name of this island, which in turn comes from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.
